On February 7, 2012 Tulare County became a "Share the Road" county by proclamation stemming from a unanimous vote of the Tulare County Board of Supervisors. This is the culmination of several months of work by a Share the Road committee, consisting of SSC club members working with County officials, TCAG, and other groups, such as the Visalia Runners, Visalia Tri, Team in Training, and walking groups.
Some of the objectives of the Share the Road Committee are as follow:
1) To place Share the Road signage at strategic locations, such as on Rocky Hill in Exeter and Lewis Hill in Porterville. Ultimately, Share the Road signs will be placed throughout the County.
2) To increase Share the Road awareness through media, information, and education. Programs like, “3 Feet Please” will be promoted through various media outlets to encourage motor vehicle operators to allow a safe distance between themselves and pedestrians and cyclists.
3) To promote cooperation and education among all stakeholders, including those who are unaffiliated with any recognized group.
4) To conduct outreach to area schools to promote a Share the Road philosophy with the next generation of drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
On March 14, 2012 the first "Share the Road" signs went up on Rocky Hill and out in Yokohl Valley. We're moving now!
Stay tuned. There is much more to come.
